Yuri,

Congratulations on your letter which highlights the blinkers "Afrikaaners" continue to wear with regards to a dialect that has evolved from Dutch, and one that has evolved into, and been enriched by so many other communities. Not only did other Nations add colour to their language, but they also added strength to the "Afrikaaner" bloodline. They forget that when the Great Trek began, the first group of people they mixed with were the French Hugenots, whose names they still carry with pride and ignorance. I challenge any "Afrikaaner" to trace the root of names like Du Toit, Du Preeze, etc and prove that they are not derivations from French. When one listens to the songs they cling to so dearly as proof of their "Nationalistic" traditions, one will find that they're direct copies/translations of German/Dutch/Austrian songs that were composed long before the "Afrikaaner" became a "Nation". If these mixed bred, and in some cases, in-bred Nation were just a little môre considerate of others, and stopped indoctrinating their children into believing a bunch of myths and lies they used for their propaganda since the establishment of their Republic, the country would be a much better place. And their children will be more willing and capable of treating others who are different from themselves with more dignity and respect. To use this analogy; when you corner an insecure animal (in this case we have called their bluff), it will do anything in desperation to escape - this is where the Afrikaaner is currently.

Regards,
