| Cycle the Cape Argus for the Give me a Chance Children’s Foundation |
Yes, now you too can be part of making our country a better place. We’ve created the platform for you to make a difference and you might just have some fun doing so! Our aim for the Argus 2011 is to raise R500 000 by having 250 riders (each accruing total pledges of R2 000, 00), cycling for the “Give me a Chance Children’s Foundation”. Funds are directed towards the children’s school and hostel fees, school clothing, books, sport equipment, extra mural activities including church camps and pocket money of R50 per month. Not only do the learners receive the necessary support to achieve on academic and sport levels, but they also have the chance to fulfill previously unreachable dreams, with our mentorship program where our local NG Kerk Sentraal, Stellenbosch “Die Familiekerk” is officially involved.
We are excited to see as many riders sporting in GMAC branded cycling kit. Serious riders elect their own starting time; the not so serious riders can ride in the “Give me a Chance Children’s Foundation Group” start time between 08h30 and 08h45. (Final time will be confirmed)
What to do:
You need to enter yourself for the race.
First time riders and previous riders need to connect to this link and update their details.
After completing and updating your details you will receive a reference number. Riders who would like to start in the Charity group please forward the reference number together with your name, surname, ID number and shirt size to hope@givemeachance.co.za
Riders who choose to start in their own time slot , please forward your name, surname, ID number and shirt size to hope@givemeachance.co.za, before October 23, 2010. Shirt sized as per First Ascent cycling gear.
You purchase a “Give me a Chance Cycling” shirt (+/- R300) and send this email out to all your contacts, friends and family. It is not about the big amounts raised but about all the small amounts put together. The Foundation will reimburse any cyclist his/her cycling shirt’s cost that raises more than R2000.
As an incentive, the top Fund Raisers would be heroed with the following prizes:
1. 4 Nights accommodation (room only) for 4 couples at the King George Hotel and a round of golf at Kingswood Golf Estate to the value of R15 000.
2. 2 nights accommodation for two in Clovelly - honeymoon suite on Alluvia (value R6 000). www.alluvia.co.za
3. Two boxes of “Give Me a Chance” red wine (value R1 000).
The “Give Me a Chance” Children’s Foundation was established in October 2004 by Delarey and Sandie Brugman of Alluvia Specialist Winery and Guest House in Stellenbosch. They created the Foundation in an effort to make a tangible contribution to South African society which would allow them to look back at the establishment of the organization as a turning point in their lives.
Marco Hendriks was 16 years old orphan from our rural community, Kylemore when we interviewed him for acceptance into the Foundation. “What would you like to become one day.” I enquired upon which this child with no seeming future from a rural informal settlement, “an Auditor, sir” he replied. Surprised by his knowledge I questioned his reasoning to which I found “I promised myself that my children would not grow up like I do”. It broke my heart. I realised that all this child needs is a shot at life. This is what “Give me a Chance” does. Finding children with courage, against the odds and giving them an opportunity to make it.
Marco went on to become Head Boy at Kylemore High in 2007. He undertook a bridging course at Stellenbosch University in 2008. Started his BComm Accounting in 2009 and is busy with his second year on his way to become an Auditor. Marco has since been awarded the GT Ferreira Bursary as well as a sponsorship from Van Schaik Bookstore.
An encouraged example by the Fund for our ever growing family of “GMAC” Riders: Find 20 people pledging R100 each, this has been proven to be a very do-able option. This extrapolates into the R500 000 target, which shows the little amounts, add up!
Contributions can either be made in cash to your cyclist, or via an EFT into the following account:
Give me a Chance Children’s Foundation Bank: First National bank Branch code: 200610 Acc.: 62239698444 Branch: Stellenbosch Reference: Argus (and your cyclist’s name – VERY IMPORTANT!)
For any queries please email the Foundation at hope@givemeachance.co.za
Thank you for having fun bettering yourself and our country’s future!
